Schmidt – has had himself stung over 1,000 times by nearly 100 insect species, all in the name of science In 1984, he came out with a sting pain index (SPI) which rated the relative pain caused by the sting of hymenoptera (that’s wasps, bees and ants)  on a scale from 0 (almost imperceptible) to 4 (intensely painful). In his book and in a magazine article, he colorfully described the feeling and where certain insect are on the scale.
