7 Type Of Student Career That Didn’t Existed 15 Years Ago

The majority of new career paths sprouting today are driven by rapid advances in Science, technology, and engineering. What once was a small collection of highly specialized courses and classes has now transformed into full – blown fields of study. Here are some of the major that didn’t exist at the turn of the millennium.

Robotics Engineering

The US Bureau of labor Statistics estimates that the demand for qualified robotics engineers  will grow 13% by 2028.

Robots and robotics technology is now used everywhere – factories, service centers, labs and hospitals, personnel devices, officers, and even homes.

Some academic Institutions now offer graduate studies in artificial intelligence.

The Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Worcester, MA)  offers a Bachelor of Science in Robotics Engineering reportedly in the first in the US.

Cyber Security

Cyber warfare is a major threat to businesses and governments, especially as more sensitive information is exchanged electronically.

The need for a specialists in this area was stressed by former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who said that the Pentagon is “desperately short of people who have capabilities (defensive and offensive cybersecurity war skills) in all the services and we have to address it.”

Some institutions already have a Master’s program in Technology and Policy

The University of Texas at San Antonio (San Antonio, TX) offers a Bachelor of Business Administration in Cyber Security.

Human Computer Interaction

Majors in Human computer Interaction (HCI) focus on improving human experiences and work practices with technology. Students study the impact of technology on individuals and organisations.

Courses in HCL  have been offered since the 1960s, but degree programs have seen a steady growth. HCI majors are normally located in computer science schools, and studies in this field are multidisciplinary.

Through most HCI programs are at the graduate level, there are degree programs like that of the University of Washington (Seattle, WA)  which offers a bachelor of Science in Human Centered Design and Engineering.

Nanotechnology

Controlling matter at minute levels has become reality due to amazing breakthroughs in nanotechnology.

Nanotechnology works on molecular level systems that can be applied across various disciplines including physics, engineering, and chemistry.

Interest in nanotechnology is on the rise and is being encouraged by the National Nanotechnology Initiative, established in 1998.

Nanotechnology programs are mostly at the graduate level, but several programs provide a background in nanotechnology studies, like Louisiana Tech University (Ruston, LA) which offers a Bachelor of science in nanosystems Engineering.

Biotechnology

Biotechnology combines biology and technology to study and solve agricultural, food science and medical issues.

It is an interdisciplinary field that is often combined with a business degree. Such as the joint degree program at Johns Hopkins University.

There are several related fields including Bioinformatics and biomedical engineering.

The majority of degree in the fields are at the master’s level, but there are bachelor’s degrees, like the one at the Delaware State University (Dover, DE) which offers an undergraduate degree in biotechnology .

New Media Online Journalism

One of the fastest growing areas of journalism is online media, which combines traditional journalism studies with courses on the design and management of digital media.

The new media program at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco concentrates on computer skills and design of online media, while others like the one at Indiana University / Purdue University, Indianapolis, integrate communications and digital skills.

The rise of online content has also led to the emergence of programs on Social Media as a major, or Master’s programs in Data journalism.

The Boston University (Boston MA) offers a Bachelor of Science in Online Journalism.

Game Design

The estimated worth of the global online gaming market stood at $41.4 billion in 2015.

Mobile gaming on the other hand, is projected to be worth a staggering $100 billion by  2017.

The trend of gamification in the workplace requires designers and developers to be able to built  products as a game, or  internal software with a game component.

The University of Utah (Salt Lake City) offers a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Entertainment Arts & Engineering emphasis.
